Although I’m fond of cats, I am not able to keep one in my own small apartment. Luckily, when I’m in need of fluffy cuddles, I can always go to Le New Chatouille where a bunch of cats are waiting to be pet. It’s one of the few cat cafés in Brussels, which makes it by default an exceptional place.
The cat café
Situated close to Place Stephanie, Le New Chatouille is a small café with some very special regulars. A bunch of cats is always present occupying the chairs, playing around or luring customers in while posing in front of the large front window ;-) When we visited, there were about five cats and one even jumped on our table to say hi. All of them were well looked after and in good condition.
The design of the place is quite simple and mostly dedicated to the needs of the cats. There are cat toys, cat baskets and various books about cats. A special door makes sure that the little critters don’t wander off onto the street.
The owner is very nice and totally dedicated to the wellbeing of the cats. From the way she talks about them, you can tell she’s very preoccupied with them and knows all their individual characteristics. You’ll have to be able to speak some basic French to communicate though.
The kitchen is locked away from the cats for hygiene reasons. On the menu you’ll find a basic offer of beer, soda and hot drinks. There are also some snacks like pancakes, waffles, sandwiches and quiches. Prices are slightly higher than average, but remember that you’re actually supporting the cats with your contribution.
Adopt a cat
Apart from a cat café, Le New Chatouille also accommodates a cat shelter downstairs. The non-profit organization Every Cat takes in stray cats that are in need of help. They give them medical care, chip them, vaccinate them and sterilize them. Once they are healthy again, the cats become available for adoption.
The most social animals are allowed in the café where they get used again to interaction with people. If you happen to fall in love with one of the four-legged creatures, you might just happen to take him home with you. Discuss the details with the owner to learn about the adoption procedure.
